Challenge

Ontario International Airport is a full-service, medium hub facility in one of the fastest growing transportation regions of the U.S. There are 220 daily flights with service to every major city in the country, accommodating 10 million passengers a year. When the time came to replace one of the aging runways, CSI was called. The third major runway poured by Coffman in the last five years, this project entailed the removal of the existing asphalt runway and construction of a new, 17-inch thick concrete replacement. With a fleet of specialty equipment including 5 paving machines, 3 mobile mixing plants and a wide array of support gear, CSI has poured more than 500,000 cubic yards of concrete airfield pavements.

Coffman added high-speed taxiways and new Portland cement concrete cross taxiways. During the project, the airport issued a change order, adding an additional 32,000 square yards of concrete to accommodate the new Airbus A-380, the largest passenger airliner in the world. This was in addition to the original 188,000 square yards specified in the original contract.
