Challenge
As a subcontractor to Skanska, Coffman Specialties, Inc. was contracted to pave approximately 30 lane-miles of Route 60 from The City of Industry adjacent Los Angeles to Diamond Bar in Orange County, California. Constructed in a phased approach to minimize traffic concerns, a total of 28,500 cubic meters of lean concrete base and 57,000 cubic meters of Portland Cement Concrete pavement was poured over a three-year period. Complicating the project on the busy east-west thoroughfare was the requirement for widening the median as well as outside lanes. The work entailed considerable zero clearance paving along retaining walls.
CSI utilized both ready-mix concrete and our own batch plant on the 13 mile-long project, and installed a technology-driven Freeway Management System consisting of close-circuit television cameras, ramp metering, vehicle detection and other systems tied together in a complex network.
