Challenge
In the High Sierra mountains of California, the abundant snowfall makes the area near Truckee a favorite destination for skiers of all types. This project called for the paving of Route 80, west of Truckee, near Donner Summit. A total of 47,600 cubic meters of concrete pavement, gore paving and rapid set paving were used on the two season project, with pouring occurring over the warmer summer months. To accomplish the project on difficult terrain, general contractor Teichert Construction moved all traffic to the west bound while the east bound was placed – full 46 feet width with a computerized Dowel Bar Inserter. CSI mobilized three pavers in the initial season for various ramps and shoulder pavements that were needed.
In addition, CSI had to contend with stringent regulations mandated by state water quality officials to prevent polluting the Truckee River. During the second season, Teichert was awarded another project some 13 miles away, in Truckee, and once again chose CSI as concrete subcontractor. In addition to completing the Soda Springs project, requiring more than 26,000 cubic meters of concrete, CSI delivered over 12,000 cubic meters of concrete to the new project from our onsite plant, all within a span of 4 months.
