Challenge

Sky Harbor International Airport, owned and operated by the City of Phoenix since 1935, is one of the 10 busiest in the nation, with over 1200 arrivals and departures daily. It has a $90 million economic impact every day. The reconstruction of the north runway required fast-track concrete paving – more than 400,000 square yards of 18-inch pavement for the runways and taxiways. An additional 215,000 square yards of asphaltic concrete was used for runway and taxiway shoulder paving.

Because the airport planned no disruption of service, multiple phased paving took place at an active airport handling 100,000 passengers and 600 tons of air cargo daily. CSI completed the runway and high-speed taxiways in 80 calendar days.
