Challenge

Nine miles from downtown Phoenix, Glendale is home to a quarter of a million people as well as the NFL’s Cardinals, spring training for Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox, and the NHL’s Coyotes. Being in the middle of a busy business district, this complicated project had several unique requirements and multiple change orders.

Existing utilities had to be relocated and a new sewer main installed more than 20 feet underground. The project specified a 108-inch storm drain including construction of a 3-level, 50×70 foot pump station 65-feet below street level. Value engineering of this pumping station yielded significant cost savings for ADOT.

CSI also constructed new 8-, 12- and 24-inch DIP waterlines within the city as well as water services to commercial buildings. There were 66 catch basins, 52 manholes for sewer and storm drains, and 5 junction structures tying together the 108-inch drain and a pump station discharge box. All together, there were 5 sizes of storm drain installed.

Lastly, a 300-foot long by 150-foot wide I-girder bridge was built including landscape planters, traffic lights and a 54-inch pressurized irrigation line hung below.
